Tŷ Newydd Virtual Courses

Tŷ Newydd Virtual Courses: How do they work?

Our new virtual courses will offer writers in Wales and the rest of the world the opportunity to take part in one of Tŷ Newydd’s famous creative writing courses from the comfort of their own home. Launched in 2020 during the lockdown, these virtual courses offer writers who can’t travel to Tŷ Newydd the opportunity to be tutored by renowned writers in a format that mirrors a real residential course.

These workshops will be delivered via the video conferencing platform, Zoom. You will need good internet access to take part in this course, and we advise you to try Zoom out before booking onto the course to make sure that everything works.

The number of participants on our virtual courses will be capped at 10 to ensure that everyone receives close individual attention and feedback.

Each course will be different, and you will receive a detailed timetable to guide you through the week. However, most courses will follow a timetable similar to this one:

Monday

3.00 pm – 4.30 pm: Introductory session and the tutors to set a writing task.
Evening: Free time to work on your writing task.

Tuesday

10.00 am – 12.30 pm (with a break in the middle for refreshments): Workshop
2.00 pm – 5.00 pm: Tutors to run one-to-one tutorials with each writer. Timetable will be provided at the beginning of the course.
8.00 pm – 9.00 pm: Reading by the tutors of their own work followed by a Q&A session

Friday

10.00 am – 11.30 pm: A group discussion with both tutors about the craft, the industry, the workshops.
2.00 pm – 5.00 pm: Tutors to continue with the one-to-one tutorials.

8.00 pm – 9.30 pm: Group celebration and readings of the work written during the week.

Additional Activity

  • During the afternoons, a Zoom chat room – or a virtual Tŷ Newydd library – will be open for you to drop in for a chat with your co-writers. A Literature Wales staff member will also be present for a set time to answer any questions you may have about our opportunities for writers.
  • Former Tŷ Newydd participants might remember our resident chef, Tony’s delicious food. Some of his recipes are available on our blog for you to prepare during the week.
