Mavis Cheek began her writing life with journalism and travel writing and later her short stories featured in magazines and collections. In 1988, her novel, Pause Between Acts, was published by The Bodley Head and won the She/John Menzies First Novel Prize. She has been called Jane Austen in modern dress and the Godmother of women’s comic fiction. She has published sixteen novels and her short stories are published in various collections.
