Literature Wales celebrates Santes Dwynwen Day
Mon 14 January 2019 / , , / Written by Literature Wales

On Friday 25 January, which is Dydd Santes Dwynwen, Literature Wales will once again play cupid by offering a card service for hopeless romantics across the country. Dwynwen is the Welsh patron saint of lovers. In the tale told of her, Dwynwen falls in love with a young man named Maelon, but rejects his advances. An angel provides her with a potion. Maelon drinks it and turns into ice. Dwynwen then prays for three requests. These three requests are that Maelon be released; that, through her, God look after all true lovers; and that she remain unmarried. She then retreats to the solitude of Ynys Llanddwyn off the west coast of Anglesey and remains there until her death.

This project celebrated 10 years in 2018, and over the years the cards have certainly helped spread the love within Wales and beyond. This year, the cards will feature a poem and illustration by artist Manon Awst. There will be a limited number of 50 cards available.

Literature Wales will send the cards on your behalf.

To order, get in touch with the following information:

  • Name and address of recipient
  • Your name (or you can remain anonymous should you wish)
  • Message you’d like to include in the card

The last date to order your card is Tuesday 22 January. We will post all cards that afternoon and place them in the Royal Mail’s capable hands.
